A cartoon was a preparatory drawing for a piece of art such as a fresco, painting, tapestry, or stained glass window. The term originates in the Middle Ages. Cartoon comes from the Italian cartone and the Dutch karton for "strong, heavy pasteboard" the material on which the study was drawn.
